Getting Into It

Well, here we go!

We've gotten to the point where we decided we'd really benefit from having a centralized location to post pics and info related to homestead activities. Let's see how we do keeping this reasonably up to date. Here's the quick update:

Lambing 2012 began April 5 and ended April 30 with 12 Soay ewes, 11 Soay rams, and 1 Shetland ewe being born. Everyone was healthy and is doing very well! Our average Soay weight was 4.77lbs this year - up .4lbs. from last year, and only slightly up from the previous 2 seasons.

Here are a couple of our standout lambs - Dicentra and Persicaria, respectively:

Melissa and I have each purchased a Morgan horse for riding and driving. Melissa's is a 4yo liver-chestnut gelding (Valentine) and mine is a 5yo sorrel mare (Penny). Both are registered and we're planning on using them for local transportation.

Lily (our American Milking Devon cow) is due 7/20 and is looking great! (Pun partly intended.)

Honey supers are on the hives and more need to be added. Last year we got 120lbs out of 2 supers and this year we have 3 supers on so far and expect to add 2 more! If they all end up filled, our little extractor-spinning arms are going to be mighty tired come harvest.

Happy 4th of July!
